Day complete dedıcated to the discovery of the heritage of Byzantin Empire. Byzantins, during the middle age, have been always designated by the term « Romans «. Byzance, famous with its capital city Constantinople, has been in fact Orient (East) Roman Empire. Constantinople, the new Rome, has become the capital of an evolution of a civilisation of polythéisme to a christian orthodoxe.
The days begins with visit of the Church Myrelaion. This is an old orthodoxe church transformed to a mosque by the Ottomans and known as Bodrum Mosque. Built in 10th Century, close to a an imperial palace under the reign of Romans, 1st Lécapene, for sheltering the family tomb.
Next visit will be the church of Sainte-Théodosie. The church is estimated to be uilt in 11th Century, transformed to Mosque by the Ottomans and known as Gul Camii. The initial name comes from a the name of orthodoxe Sainte martyred in iconoclastic period.
The next step will be Orthodoxe Patriarchy of Constantinople, called by the Turks today Fener Rum Ortodoks Patrikhanesi, which is a unique byzantin institution still functioning today and having the first jurisdiction over the Church orthodoxe. Visiting its dedicated church to St.George will allow you to learn about the liturgy orthodoxe.
Notre-Dame-des- Mongols, is the only church in Istanbul which is not transformed to as mosque. It function as a culte place since Byzantin times. The church formerly dedicated to Théotokos Panayiotissa (Notre-Dame-Mere-de-Dieu) has become a refuge of byzantin princesse, following the death of her husband. Maria Paléologue, wife of the Khan of Mongols in 13th Century. The church decorated by the frecoes preserves still its autanticity.
Then lunch break.
Following the lunch, you will pass through the to Saint Jean Baptiste –in-Trullo Chapelle (Hirami Ahmet Pasa Mescidi) and visit the Museum of Fethiye, the ancient church of Théotokos Pammakaristos. The church dates back to 13th Century is one of the principal churches of
Patriarchy orthodoxe. Today, it serves as a museum for the byzantin frescoes and mosaics it possesses.
Finally in the afternoon, we will be heading to the ramparts of Constantinople for observing military architecture and crossing a cemetery having a historical value we will arrive to a monastary orthodoxe called Poissons, Notre-Dame-de-Pighi (Balikli Meryem Ana Rum Ortodoks Manastırı). The monastry is still in function the middle of muslim and christian cemeteries. Its church dates back to 19th Century and sits next to a fontain with holy water (aghiasma). The place has been visited since 5th Century not only by plgrims but also by ill people hoping recovery. Since 19th Century the patriarches orthodoxes have been buried in this monastary togther with the eminent people of the greek orthodox and Karamanlides, christian orthodox speaking Turkish but writing in greek alpabet.
