My brain did it to me too! Sure seems like the perfect opportunity to confess all of one's lies and yet Chris stays quiet. All he did was add up the pieces of Major Marquis Warren he knew. So this leaves a power vacuum.

The greyest of grey characters. I'd love for Tarantino to read theories like this one on his films and respond to them in the way Jordan Peele did for Get Out. The theory works without changing anything. A rather strange moment to commit to a lie, if it were one. True that he'd been made Sheriff, and a lie that he would stay that way for long. I wasn't sure how to bring that up in an update edit. are the only "pure of heart" ones.

It's my way of paying homage.
With the hard part done, next comes the killing. A possibility, backstory, and upvote is all I can hope to inspire in a person reading this. That'd be the dream!

I love the ambiguous nature of Walton Goggin's character Chris Mannix in The Hateful Eight. You can tell he looked up to his daddy.

In fact, one of the first things that Chris does is interact with the person he believes to be Red Rock's new hangman. Yet still an honest man nonetheless. I realized it when I bought the Reservoir Dogs DVD and saw that Tarantino had written biographies for each of the characters that we were never privy to. (If this was Game of Thrones, Chris would be a Tyrion type character. I honestly believe Tarantino meant it to be applicable either way, he's good at leaving unapparent connections and not spoonfeeding meanings. While it’s never revealed to be a lie, it’s never confirmed to be true, either. They do this in order to make it seem authentic to the already established sharp-eyed Chris Mannix. Chris clearly thought he was going to be the new Sheriff. A similar thing happens when they reach the Haberdashery. My goal was to keep it as ambiguous headcanon, in spirit to what Tarantino was originally trying to do. Even if he said it was wrong. And when John Ruth refuses to let him board without manacles, Mannix tells O.B. So if Tarantino were to see this theory, I hope he and Walton would agree it fits with Chris' already established character. And if he wasn't, what's the lie for? We learn during bits of dialogue throughout the movie that Erskine Mannix led a team of Confederate rebels known as Erskine's Marauders during and after the Civil War. The isolation of that movie makes you forget that there's an entire world just outside of the cabin that all of the characters are tied to. Thanks. This is the role that made me fall in love with Goggins and I'll pretty much watch anything he's in. Remember what I said about the number of kids? Seems like a lot of trouble for nothing. Chris says as much when talking about fighting under his father's command.

is such a bold choice for a protagonist. Looks like you're using new Reddit on an old browser. Cause he never lies throughout the whole movie. I love this theory and your writing style. 20 talking about this. While Mannix was not exactly "pure of heart", he is closer to it than the rest. That makes me love the character even more. This needed to get explored and it excites me to see another person who gets it. Press question mark to learn the rest of the keyboard shortcuts. A very cunning commitment to a lie if I've ever seen one. If he wasn't the sheriff, what's wrong with shooting who you know to be the bad guy if there aren't legal repercussions? I wholeheartedly agree. It'd be the bees knees if Tarantino called this theory out. that he will be legally obliged to inform the Marshal at Red Rock that Ruth left the new Sheriff to freeze without assisting him. So I'm considering this a job well done. Thanks for liking the theory and I'm enthralled that you love my writing style too. Look at Chris, he ain't dressed in rags.) I think O.B. and bribe public officials to rig the election so Chris becomes Sheriff.

If he's the youngest of the family then one could infer that he's had the hard life. Second way is by horse. I've literally put the movie on because of what you said.

Also, I'm sorry/think it's really cool I fooled your brain into thinking that Chris Mannix was an alright guy. And he never asked.
To me, that's one of the charms of the movie....everyone's kinda f'd up. Sort of like Fredo. So we can assume that he meant what he said. Rewatching right now and when the shooting finally starts, even with a bullet just lodged in him, Chris doesn't shoot Joe Gage when Joe says he's unarmed and calls him Sheriff. I Always thought of the "hateful 8" as the people with bounties on their heads; aka the Dormague gang [Jodie, Daisy, Senior Bob, Joe Gage, Oswoldo] + the three dead bounties Marquis already had. Chris Mannix was a jolly good character with epic and memorable parts (like Quentin likes to write them), made me admire Walton Goggins, completely. So if his family was planning to get rid of him and his overly smart and mouthy ways, they had set up several opportunities to have it done. All it takes is finding someone else also willing to kill the Sheriff. What it could mean though, is that he was given a lame horse without his knowledge. Now let's look at Chris. So, he's great at spotting lies.

Meaning that if this is a regular Carolinan family from the 1800's, they would have as many kids as possible. Walton Goggins has really nailed some awesome roles in the last few years! There's another great point you draw too: Actually, the only character I would classify as "pure of heart" is O.B. A man who joined his father and family to ransack towns in order to inspire fear for the Confederacy, dying by the side of the type of person he hated most.

Erskine Mannix held the Marauders together after the war with nothing but his command and respect. He's the best of both worlds. When Mannix meets John Ruth and Co. and Ruth asks for his badge, Chris tells them that if they're bounty hunters, it's him they're taking their dead bounties to. Nice work man !!! Here's where things get subjective and I don't have a lot of information on (Part of why I'm putting it out to the world.). Walton says this about whether or not he's the Sheriff: I only had one question for Quentin: ‘Is Mannix really the sheriff of Red Rock? It's a long distance from Wyoming to Red Rock. (Really, I should've used Tyrion from the books as an example. In the end, Chris was telling the truth and also unknowingly lying. Third thing is the blizzard. In fact, it's one of the things Chris most admired about his father. Cause I'm with you. He even realizes his tongue is getting him into stupid trouble on the stagecoach so he shuts down the conversation and apologizes for his getting riled up. Chris acts wholly like a man who is going to be a Sheriff. And for Walton and Quentin to say, "No, you decide." Thanks for reading and enjoying the theory too.

Sheriff Chris Mannix : [as Warren approaches General Smithers] Warren, goddamn it, you leave that old man alone. But enough of them to dislike the little one.

Have my upvote, please I insist. There's a line by John Ruth where he says that Chris is Erskine Mannix's youngest boy. Both values of honest men. So if this theory holds true, that would only make him half bad, counting him out of the "Hateful".
