It’s one of those areas defined as Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in England, in fact the largest of them. The area consists of medieval villages, ancient residences, so many historic neighborhoods, that will make you feel like you are in a film studio for shooting a scenery from Middle Ages.
In this area Bibury is one of our favourites. It’s the cutest village you can ever see with its gorgeous Cotswold stone houses and heavenly nature. This village has its own magic, like all the neighborhood is out of a fairytale. It’s very probable to come across with a backdrop from the famous films Bridget Jones’s Diary or Stardust.
The most common scenery from Bibury is the Arlington Row cottages, which were build in 14th Century for the purpose of storing wools of the monastery. In 17th Century, they were converted into cottages for the weavers. You must make sure to wander around the side-streets of the village. You’ll find so many fairy-tale cottages and heavenly gardens for your pleasure.
Bourton on the Water is another gorgeous Cotswolds village worth visiting. The place is full of picturesque streets together with the River Windrush passing through the place. Just wandering through the neighborhood will make you feel good, but we also suggest you to take your time for visiting a local pub for tasting the local delicacies of traditional English menus.
Have you ever watched the television series Downtown Abbey? If so, you must take your time to visit the historic Blenheim Palace, which will be an acquaintance from Downtown Abbey series. Blenheim Palace, once was the home for 12th Duke of Marlborough and his family, will inspire you with its lavishly decorated State Rooms and some of the most impressive painting collections of Europe. The UNESCO World Heritage Site Palace is also the birth place of Sir Winston Churchill.
If you are in the Cotswolds you must also spend time in the small market towns around the area. Chipping Camdon is one of our favorite market towns with its elegant terraced high street and friendly local shops. The medieval market hall with its splendid arches from 17th century definitely worth visiting. The place was a rich wool trading center during Middle Ages.
There are two finely crafted historic gardens near the town, Hidcote Manor Garden and Kiftsgate Court Garden. Hidcote Manor Garden, owned and managed by National Trust, is the most famous crafted garden in Britain. You can find so many activities here integrated in a wonderful atmosphere. You can even join an outdoor photography workshop to make the best out of the beauties around you.
After a long days walk, you should experience the local pubs in the area for sure. The village pubs are wonderful here, with their historic atmosphere, timber ceilings and Cotswold stone walls. You will have the opportunity to taste excellent food and drink in these lovely, cozy places. We would absolutely recommend you to visit The Ebrington Arms Pub, which is 8 minutes drive from Chipping Camden. It’s the best village pub in UK in 2017 according to The Times. We recommend you to try their fabulous food before leaving the Cotswolds.
